Laboratory Introduction Session – J Hogie- 24/09/2013 FBE pag. 9 Use plastic or glass sample bottles to store samples Always use your name, your field of education (e.g. CC) the date and content.. No laboratory glassware (e.g. weighing watch glasses, beakers) can be put in the oven Ask the laboratory responsible for a place to store the samples. Laboratory glassware can only be marked with a marker with a fine tip. No private collection of dedicated equipment. Discard used samples as soon as they are analyzed. A lab coat and safety glasses are to be worn in the laboratory. If handling toxic or aggressive media use appropriate gloves Never touch hot crucibles, even with heath resistant gloves

Never put in the sink solids, highly viscous suspensions toxic chemicals, strong acids, oxidisers or bases smelly substances If in doubt ask the responsible. Broken glass is to be collected in the glass container. If equipment is broken, dirty or unavailable always notify the laboratory responsible. Don’t store your personal equipment in the laboratory if you are not there. For storing Books, lab coats, etc, use the metal cupboards outside the laboratory. Never transport material from other laboratories

Never move a balance Always store pH electrodes in 3M KCl A Warm water: 50% tap water 50% AD In the evening all laboratory tables need to be emptied and cleaned, don’t leave anything standing on the tables for the next day (e.g. heaters, sample bottles, glassware). If it is really necessary to leave equipment standing, ask the responsible. In case of problems the laboratory responsible will notify, the promoter, lab assistant or whoever is the end responsible for the student
