2 2 IN A LAND FAR, FAR AWAY…

3 3 OUR CHALLENGE… In order to maintain our standard of living, NZ will need to ‘earn’ more (through exports) However, of all OECD nations, NZ: – has the smallest ‘domestic’ market – is furthest away from its export markets This ‘distance from market’ is a penalty on NZ equal to about 10% of GDP (OECD, 2008) As a nation, we therefore cannot afford to be less than super efficient in our transport logistics Network providers and operators must excel in our efforts to improve the efficiency of freight (and in particular, product to market) Can some form of regional planning be the answer?
