1 Unit 01 “Forces and the Laws of Motion” Newton’s Laws Station Lab

2 As a class fill out which stations correspond with each law.
1st Law “Inertia” 2nd Law “F=ma” 3rd Law “Action/Reaction”

3 As a class fill out which stations correspond with each law.
1st Law “Inertia” 2nd Law “F=ma” 3rd Law “Action/Reaction” 1 2 3 4 7 6 5

4 1st Law “Inertia” 2nd Law “F=ma” 3rd Law “Action/Reaction” 1 2 3 4 7 6 5 Question for Stations Station Safety of seatbelts and Crash-Test Dummies After watching the crash-test video, why should you wear a seatbelt when in a car? Station Skateboard and Reaction Carts Do skateboards with different masses have the same acceleration when pushed with the same force? Station Rollerblades and Newton’s Cradle Is it correct to say, the person move because the person pushes themselves off the table? Station Nuts and Cup & Penny When the hoop is pulled from under the nuts, why don’t the nuts move horizontally with the hoop? Station The Tablecloth Trick When a tablecloth is pulled off the table, is it really a “trick” (or magic) that the cup and plate stay on the table? Station Balloon Rockets When the balloon is released, does the balloon push itself forward? Station Accelerating a Wagon When released and pulled by the same force, do the heavier wagon and the lighter wagon accelerate the same amount?

5 In your groups, choose one station from each law and answer the corresponding question “proficiently”, first on the white board and then copy it below. Example Question: When at rest on a bus that begins to move forward suddenly, do you fall backwards? Answer: No, you do not fall backwards when the bus suddenly moves forward. Explain: According to Newton’s 1st law of motion an object at rest will remain at rest unless acted on by an outside force. Support: A force is put on the bus to accelerate it, but no force is put on the person so they remain at rest. The bus moves under the person, they do not fall backwards.

6 In your groups, choose one station from each law and answer the corresponding question “proficiently”, first on the white board and then copy it onto your lab sheet. Newton’s 1st Law of Motion Station #________ Question: Answer: Pushing the Learning: Answer an additional MEDIUM level question and/or an the HARD level question!!!

7 Answering Newton’s Laws Questions Proficiently
Answer the question. What happened or what will happen? Explain the relationship. Which Newton’s law explains the answer the 1st, 2nd or 3rd? Support with data/observations. How does the law explain answer, what observations demonstrate the law?

8 (Partially Proficient)
Scoring Rubric Support and Development 3 (Proficient) 2 (Partially Proficient) 1 (Below Proficient) (Not Proficient) Specific and direct reference to material used to demonstrate validity of conclusions. Conclusions are based on specific material evidence; support is logical and clearly/directly demonstrates the validity of conclusion. Conclusions are based on evidence from material; support is logical and generally demonstrates the validity of thesis Some conclusions are based on evidence from material; support lacks specificity Conclusions are not supported with evidence from the text
