1 Manifest Destiny (1790-1850) Created by: Jeyton, Nathan, and Rose
This was the time period of Manifest destiny. The American belief was that we should have all the lands from the Atlantic to the pacific. Throughout this time period American was able to acquire this land section by section by different methods. In many cases we purchased large chunks of land such as, the Louisiana purchase and in other cases we just took the land through war (California from Mexico). During this time period we obtained most of what today is the continental united states and later on we would also add Alaska and Hawaii. Created by: Jeyton, Nathan, and Rose

2 Manifest Destiny had to take the path of war sometimes
Manifest Destiny had to take the path of war sometimes. Not only were the 13 colonies won by war, but so were the lands of Texas, Utah, New Mexico, and California. Here, Texans led by Davey Crockett, take on the Mexican armies of Santa Anna at the Alamo. Though the Mexicans won the battle they lost the war and eventually had to give up all of the lands listed above to the United States. The big question was; would slavery be allowed in these new lands?

3 Gold Fever. Nothing like a little discovery to make a nation go crazy
Gold Fever!! Nothing like a little discovery to make a nation go crazy. That is what happened as news came east that there was gold in them there hills. Thousands of pioneers, many that would have never attempted to cross the vast expansion of land if not for the lure of gold, headed west. The Gold Rush of 1849 came just one year after America had won the lands of California in war with Mexico.

4 We all have to eat!! Mankind had yet to discover how to transport Texas beef across the continent without spoiling so they did the next best thing. The cattle drive was invented to bring the meat to Americans without it spoiling.

5 The white man’s land. This time period was dominated by the desire of the white man to rule and conquer a land largely unmapped and far from tame. Just like the crossing of the Atlantic many people went west searching for wealth, freedom, glory, and adventure. Whatever the reason was people were flocking to the west.

6 America doubles in size as the territory of Louisiana comes under the American Flag. Little was known of the lands that cost $15 million dollars but men like Meriwether Lewis, William Clark, and Zebulon Pike were hired to explore and map the newly acquired region. Napoleon’s troubles were definitely our gain.

7 A new call to war!!! American ships have been pirated for months by the British navy and now President James Madison has had enough. American soldiers are again called to arms to protect the nation from the British. This really was a war that neither side really wanted but both went to blows and the British even went as far as to burn the White House. However, not all was lost as Americans rallied and forced the British to surrender and leave with their defeat at the Battle of New Orleans by war hero Andrew Jackson (Old Hickory).

8 As more Americans moved west the impact on the Native American Tribes was becoming very evident. Many tribes decided to fight back and try to save their way of life and many pioneers were killed on their westward travels. Eventually overtime the white man would prevail, due to manpower and guns, and the Native tribes would be forced onto reservations.

9 The main mode of travel west was the wagon train
The main mode of travel west was the wagon train. Several families moving west would meet at designated locations to team up and form wagon trains. These pioneers paved the way for many of the main trails such as, the Santa Fe, Oregon, and California. Wagon trains were a vital mode of transportation as they provided travelers with higher numbers and better security.
