5 Materials Needed Books on apples, books of John Chapman, video about John Chapman, apples, paper, crayons, computer, worksheets, old plastic soda bottles, cork, scrap material, rubber bands, scissors, pumpkin carving kit, vegetable peelers, markers, apple seeds, soil & cups. The lessons can be covered in a week. The apple dolls take 2 weeks to dry. Planting an apple tree can last a lifetime.

7 Language Arts Use books for group reading, partner reading, and independent reading. View video to aid visual learners understanding. Vocabulary words to learn by weeks end. Have students write/draw a summary of the story of John Chapman. Talk about folk-lore.

8 Social Studies The history of John Chapman.
Talk about what life was like in the 1800’s. Talk about the states he covered while walking. Impact/Purpose of planting trees History of apple trees. Talk about what we use apples for in the United States. (food, drink, production)

9 Fine Arts Teach songs about apples. Do finger plays about apples.
Perform a play/skit about John Chapman. Make Apple dolls. Draw a picture on the computer about John Chapman.

10 Science Mathematics Have each student plant an apple seed.
Talk about parts of the apple. Mathematics Use different colors of apples to talk about sets and grouping. Cut apples and talk about fractions.

11 Differentiation Have different reading levels of books for all students’ level. Draw what they think John Chapman accomplished by planting apple trees. Write a modern day version of Johnny Appleseed.
