The Air Quality of Hong Kong Causes, Impacts and Solutions By Karen Lai 8M
2
The Air Quality of Hong Kong Hong Kong’s two main air pollution problems: Street-level pollution caused by diesel vehicles Regional smog problem caused by vehicles and power plants in both Hong Kong and the Pearl River Delta region The air quality is failing to reach the international WHO Standards. On most days the Victoria harbour is similar to the left half of the picture.
3
The causes of air pollution in Hong Kong Here are the biggest reasons for the air pollution in Hong Kong- Dense population Factories giving out smoke Vehicle exhaust Electricity generation in power plants Deforestation and forest fires Pollution from the Pearl River Delta in China
4
Which areas have the worst air quality? The graph on the left shows how much safe air there is to breathe in in different parts of Hong Kong. Congested, busy areas and areas near the Pearl river delta have the worst air quality.
5
How does it affect the people of Hong Kong? The poor air quality in Hong Kong have many negative impacts. Here are some ways it affects the people here. Bad air quality Respiratory symptoms like coughing or wheezing Damages lung tissues Worsening of existing respiratory diseases like asthma Eye irritation Acid rain causes property to be damaged Skin problems
6
How is the Government reacting to this? Promoting programmes like ‘Action Blue Sky’ Reducing the carbon emissions from power plants Investing on renewable energy Designating of more country parks around Hong Kong “ “The life expectancy in Hong Kong is among the highest in the world... you can come to only one conclusion: we have the most environmentally friendly place for people, for executives, for Hong Kong people to live.” ” -Chief Executive Donald Tsang
7
What can we do to improve the air quality? The government plays an important role in improving the air but you can help too. Here are some ways YOU can improve the air quality: Use less electricity Use public transport instead of private cars Check your car regularly, making sure the tires are fully pumped Switch off your car engine when not in use Use environmentally friendly light bulbs Recycle, Reuse and Reduce
