5 Are there opportunities to add value to existing projects? Can we use our expertise/resources to initiate partnerships? Is our internal expertise and methodologies useful ? Can we develop sustainable partnerships which build capacity? What are the challenges?  There is still a great deal of stigma relating to HIV/Aids which undermines isolated/specific interventions  The discussion regarding HIV and alcohol is gaining momentum  In order to protect our reputation we need robust responses Tracking our HIV/Aids footprint in supply chain and communities

6 Our supply chain categories Larger companies  Have the resources and expertise to address this  Collaborate and share knowledge and expertise Companies 10 – 100 employees  Provide skills and expertise  Support Small businesses – three elements of initial focus  Working with local small scale farmers  Distribution network – truck drivers  Taverners/bar waitresses

7 A preventive model for HIV/Aids, alcohol abuse and violence against women and children Educate men on the effects of violence on women and children Provide counselling for men who engage in violent acts To educate men in HIV/Aids and the links with violence To educate men on the issue of alcohol abuse and responsible use of alcohol To sensatize men as to their role in the prevention of abuse To assist with counselling and reconciliation of families To examine strategies for change Skills building behavioural interventions for reducing alcohol related HIV risk

8 Masekane – A comprehensive CSI project - SAB Ltd The objective is to develop and refine a community development model which is effective and can be replicated Raise donar funding This model addresses the main CSI areas of focus  Water  Enterprise development  HIV/Aids

9 About the community Approx. 2000 people Landowners No access to basic services Very high levels of unemployment HIV prevalence in excess of 30% High levels of alcohol abuse Many related social issues

10 Challenges Local farming community Marginalised people Disempowered = status of learned helplessness Impoverished and dysfunctional = social issues HIV/Aids Alcohol abuse and dependence Relative remoteness of the community Status of women and gender issues

11 The “what” We have developed a model which can be replicated The model involves building community cohesion Mobilising the community to address issues Empowering the community in a sustainable way Involving local Government and other stakeholders  Social services  NPO  Other NGO’s

So far A committee has been elected and is functioning effectively Members have a specific area of responsibility and have been trained Sanitation has been addressed Access to clean water next week Fire risk has been dealt with First aid ABET trainer has been trained Life skills training HIV and alcohol abuse and other social issues

15 Success Effective committee = action ABET training – numbers enrolled and complete Life skills enrollment and completion rate Skills training completion rate No people placed in employment and still employed at 6 months No. of small businesses started HIV – no. participating in VCT = 60% No. of HIV+ enrolled in treatment programme = 80% No. of social cases decrease by 30% Decrease in STI’s
