Long shutdown 2013: Electrical distribution activities 09/03/2012 IEFC 2012 Workshop F. Duval on Behalf of EN/EL group

Activities during LS1 Ongoing consolidation & upgrade details After LS1 activities Electrical distribution activities IEFC Workshop - François Duval 209/03/2012

3 different types of activities: 1.Consolidation and upgrade of the Electrical Network The ageing EL infrastructure must be updated to significantly increase availability rate and to meet CERN new requirements. Beyond the present CERN needs, these renovation activities have been defined according to the future CERN power demand. That’s why EL have worked with users on a 15 years power demand forecast. A complete program of consolidation & upgrade have been defined until 2025 and will be edited soon. This program cost is estimated at approximately 80 MCHF and shall be concentrated on 3 long shutdowns starting with LS1. Activities during LS1 IEFC Workshop - François Duval 309/03/2012

3 different types of activities: 2.Maintenance operations Since 2009 and the LHC start up, many maintenance operations have been postponed (mainly on 400 kV and 66 kV substations) because Christmas breaks have been shortened and because LHC Cryo could not be stopped. These postponed maintenance tasks must be done in 2013 in addition to regular scheduled maintenance. A complete stop of the 400 kV will be necessary for 4 weeks (in April 2013) to maintain the 400 kV circuit breakers and accessories. RTE will take profit of this stop to run its own maintenance program on the Bois-Tollot substation and on the Genissiat/Bois- Tollot Over Head Line. During these 4 weeks, only 60 MVA will be available from the substation on Swiss SIG side. (close to A gate in Meyrin) 60 MVA are enough to run CERN with all accelerators turned off but the cost of energy is 1.5 times the French price. (Coordination needed to avoid high consuming LS1 activities during this period) Activities during LS1 IEFC Workshop - François Duval 409/03/2012

3 different types of activities: 3.Requests from users Many requests have been announced and must be detailed in terms of workload and schedule. The estimated EL contribution, for all the requests known today matches the maximum acceptable by EL The major requests, not including LHC, are -LINAC 4 and its connection to the Booster - HIE ISOLDE -RAMSES system -Filters and compensators upgrades -Experiments: ELENA, COMPASS, NA62, East Hall B157 -PS access project -LIU activities Activities during LS1 IEFC Workshop - François Duval 509/03/2012

EL is increasing sharply its manpower in order to face a huge program of work. – Manpower of EL was 72 in 03/2011, 82 in 03/212 and is expected to be 88 in 01/2013 – Agreements have been signed with AGH Krakow to have 12 technicians operational in 2013. – 3 fellows, 4 PJAS, UPAS and 2 tech. students already joined the group – It’s important to have them early enough to integrate and train them so that they will be fully operational for the highest workload period – Having more people will become inefficient because of a lack of supervision Activities during LS1 IEFC Workshop - François Duval 609/03/2012

Prioritisation – In spite of the substantial increase of EN-EL resources our workload is already at 100% of our capacity – Further requests will leads to prioritisation of activities by LS1 management Activities during LS1 IEFC Workshop - François Duval 709/03/2012

Ongoing consolidation & Upgrade IEFC Workshop - François Duval 809/03/2012 Reminder: Replace ageing and/or not reliable equipment Simplification for better operations and reliable protection systems Standardisation for easier maintenance & operation Elimination of identified weak points Redundancy  availability Characteristics adapted to the CERN future needs Reliability – Availability – Safety – Evolution

Many consolidation & upgrade activities on the power network have already started in parallel with beam operations. The final connections and commissioning, which can only be done during shutdowns, are scheduled for LS1. In other words, EL workload will be high in 2012 as well. 29 Conclusions IEFC Workshop - François Duval 2909/03/2012 The LS1 step cannot be missed by EL. Otherwise, most of the works will be postponed to LS2 (3 years) The risk is a significant increase of failure rate due to: ageing electronics used in core protection relays ageing devices (> 40 years) loss of possible alternative configurations because of increased power demands
