3  Behind the Iron Curtain  Nixon visits several communist countries in order to better relations

4  Detente  Detente: Relaxing or easing international tensions (mainly with Communist countries) 3 goals of Détente: 1.Reduce risk of nuclear war 2.Cut back on military budget 3.Forge better relations with rivals

5  Balance of Power  Balance of Power: Distribution of power among nations so any one country doesn’t become too strong.

7  Détente in Space page 502- 503  Answer the critical thinking question from page 503 in your notebooks.

8  China  Nixon tries to better relations with China in order to divide China & the USSR  U.S. doesn’t officially recognize China  China invites the U.S. table tennis team in April of 1971  Ping Pong diplomacy: Secret talks about gaining closer ties between the two countries  Nixon visits China in February of 1972

9  China  China hopes that the U.S. can help them regain Hong Kong  Nixon sends Kissinger to negotiate with China  Turkey secretly helps China & the U.S. communicate with each other

10  The Soviet Union  Hoping to avoid a U.S.-China alliance the USSR will attempt to better relations with the U.S.  Nixon visits Moscow (May 72) & signs the SALT 1 (strategic arms limitation treaty) and the two countries agree to share technologies

11  The Middle East  Main Idea: Nixon’s foreign policy included easing tensions in the Middle East.  Nixon stated the U.S. would help other countries but not take responsibility for them as in Korea & Vietnam

12  Arab-Israeli Tensions  The 6 Day War (1967): Israel VS. Egypt & Syria gave Israel control in the Middle East but also made tensions between Arab countries more strained (U.S. backs Israel) Israel gains the Gaza Strip, Sinai Peninsula, and the Golan Heights.

13  Yom Kippur War  The Yom Kippur War (1973) : Was an attempt by Egypt & Syria to regain land that was lost to Israel in the 6 Day War.  The U.S. once again supports Israel and help them win.

14  Oil Embargo  Arab countries are upset with U.S. interference and they start an oil embargo against the U.S.  This embargo leads to a major gas shortage in the U.S.

15  Turn & Talk Primary source page 504  Review the political cartoon & then discuss the two questions 1.What message is the author trying to convey in this cartoon? 2.What is the event of issue that inspired the cartoon?

16  Shuttle Diplomacy  Shuttle Diplomacy: Kissinger goes to the Middle East and visits many countries to bring peace & to get the oil embargo lifted in March of 74’  U.S. improves relations with Egypt, the most powerful Arab state

17  Latin America  The U.S. tries to limit the spread of communism in Latin America  In Chile the U.S. will support a coup against the communist leader Allende.

18  Section Questions  On a separate piece of paper, to be handed in at the end of class, answer questions 2,3,4,5,7 on page 505
