The Soviet Union Hoping to avoid a U.S.-China alliance the USSR will attempt to better relations with the U.S. Nixon visits Moscow (May 72) & signs the SALT 1 (strategic arms limitation treaty) and the two countries agree to share technologies

The Middle East Main Idea: Nixon’s foreign policy included easing tensions in the Middle East. Nixon stated the U.S. would help other countries but not take responsibility for them as in Korea & Vietnam

Arab-Israeli Tensions The 6 Day War (1967): Israel VS. Egypt & Syria gave Israel control in the Middle East but also made tensions between Arab countries more strained (U.S. backs Israel) Israel gains the Gaza Strip, Sinai Peninsula, and the Golan Heights.

Yom Kippur War The Yom Kippur War (1973) : Was an attempt by Egypt & Syria to regain land that was lost to Israel in the 6 Day War. The U.S. once again supports Israel and help them win.

Oil Embargo Arab countries are upset with U.S. interference and they start an oil embargo against the U.S. This embargo leads to a major gas shortage in the U.S.
