E a r t h S c i e n c e s D i v i s i o n OSSEPP Documentation Required by LBNL ESD for all field-related activities –Project description –Identification of hazards –Emergency resources and contacts –Training, PPE, and risk-reducing measures –Site personnel –Identification of environmental threats –Site clearances and permits –Work schedule

E a r t h S c i e n c e s D i v i s i o n Hazard Identification Site-specific hazards –Climate, physical, chemical, and biological Work-specific hazards –Travel (e.g., off-road, boat, aircraft) –Work environment (e.g., confined space, dust) –Equipment (e.g., electrical, laser, high pressure) –Radiation (e.g., radiation source, NORM) –Materials (e.g., chemicals)

E a r t h S c i e n c e s D i v i s i o n Emergency Resources Identify location of emergency responders near field area (addresses, phone numbers, and maps) –Hospital/clinic/ambulance service –Police/fire Develop a emergency response plan –Emergency contacts (lab and family) –Meeting area Have a means of communication –Cell phone or satellite phone (LBNL Telephone Services can provide you with satellite telephone for use worldwide)

E a r t h S c i e n c e s D i v i s i o n Training and Hazard Mitigation Basic training required for all field activities –First Aid, CPR, Fire Extinguisher –Personal first aid kits can be checked out from LBNL Medical Group Define additional training based on identified hazards (make sure training is updated) Identify PPE required for safe work Develop safe work practices Conduct on-site safety briefings prior to work

E a r t h S c i e n c e s D i v i s i o n Environmental Protection and Permitting Identify potential hazards posed to environment by work activities Develop damage and mitigation measures Obtain all needed permits and clearances prior to conducting work –Land owner permission –Regulatory permits –Utility screening

E a r t h S c i e n c e s D i v i s i o n OSSEPP is What You Make of It Revise OSSEPP as needed to reflect changes in work activities and conditions OSSEPP belongs to all project participants Work with EH&S staff to obtain guidance on hazard identification and mitigation Plan your work with safety in mind
