EVERYDAY COUNTS CALENDAR MATH

Math is about thinking and reasoning and this is the basis of Everyday Counts.

A lot of math in only 10 to 15 minutes a day!! It provides supplemental math instruction based on simple interactive bulletin boards

Key Strategies Spread 6 to 10 major topics throughout the year (counting, place value, facts, computations, fractions, measurement) Use visual images to help students understand key concepts (100’s board, daily depositor, fraction strips, clock, money) Focus on reasoning and communication. (How did you solve it? Is there another way? Who can explain that?

Basis for Everyday Counts 1. Children need to learn mathematics incrementally over time with lots of examples. 2. Visual models help children visualize and verbalize number and geometric relationships. 3. Classroom discussions allow for the acquisition of mathematical language and reasoning skills. Also allows for children to discover strategies for problem solving.

How familiar are you with this program???

Here Are Some Changes Since 1998 Edition. 1. Calendar piece now have month printed on them. 2. Skills are being taught earlier in school year. 3. Package is different for better storage. 4. More teacher friendly teacher’s guide.

Changes Continued 5. More geometry and measurement skills. 6. Every grade level now has an informal assessment calendar. 7. There are pre, post and middle of the year tests with test items broken down on answer key by skills or strands.

Changes Continued 8. In teacher’s manual under the calendar picture, the month’s pattern is given. 9. Words highlighted in teacher’s manual are vocabulary words that may need to be introduced. 10. Shapes in calendar are now rotated to show that they are the same shape but may look different.

Teacher’s Guide As each element is introduced you will find: –New monthly lessons –Concepts and skills for that activity. –Daily routine of how to present materials. –Discussion questions. –Helpful hints to use.

3 rd Grade Major Components Calendar – patterns of colors, numbers, or geometric shapes each month. Counting tape and hundred chart – helps students develop number sense, place value, etc. Daily Depositor – reinforces place value Graphing Measurement – estimation, comparing, length, capacity, weight, etc. Coin counter – counting mixed coins Clock – daily practice reading analog and digital displays, AM,PM etc.

Questions????? Let’s look at some examples. Then we will look at your kits. (Please label on your kit TITLE ONE!!)
