Mercantilism Simulation Game
2
Review of Trade What were the 3 forms of trade?
What were the Navigation Acts? What is mercantilism? How did colonists trade with European nations other than England?
3
Mercantilism Game Toothpicks = gold bars Britain: finished products
Hershey’s New England: fish, lumber Smarties, Tootsie Rolls Middle: wheat, manufactured products Krackel (Crunch), Mr. Goodbar (Choc/Peanuts) Southern: tobacco, rice, indigo Caramels, 3 Musketeers, Dark Chocolate Spain: finished products Kit-Kat The Netherlands: finished products Starbursts
4
Your Task Your goal is to acquire as much gold as possible by trading and selling your goods.
5
Rules of Trades Colonies (N.E., Middle, Southern) can only trade with Euro countries (England, Spain, Netherlands) Euro countries can only trade with colonies Countries cannot trade with each other 2 colonial raw materials can be traded to Europe for 1 finished product OR can be sold for 1 gold bar 1 finished product can be traded to the Colonies for 2 raw materials OR can be sold for 2 gold bar AFTER TRADING you can trade your products to the “BANK” (Mr. Welchel) for gold bars (what each resource is worth) until the bank runs out of gold You cannot trade your products
6
Round 1 Begin trading for gold.
During this round, colonies can trade with ANY European country. You have 7 minutes for trading.
7
Who Won? Meet with your groups. Count the gold acquired by all members. Who won? A colonial region or European country? Why?
8
But Remember… The Navigation Acts were passed by Parliament to limit colonial trade with other European countries. During the next simulation: Spain and the Netherlands must pay 1 gold bar to England to trade with the colonies. Colonies must pay 1 gold bar to England to trade with Spain and the Netherlands. But, the colonists also became very good smugglers….
9
Round 2 Rules from Round 1 apply (colonies may only trade with Europe and visa versa). However, the Navigation Acts are also in place, so you must pay 1 gold bar to England to trade with the colonies if you are Spanish or Dutch or to trade with the Spanish or Dutch if you are a colonist… … but only if England catches you… You have 5 minutes to trade.
10
Who Won This Time? Who won?
How did the Navigation Acts impact how trade was carried out? Were the Navigation Acts always followed?
11
Salutary Neglect Almost since their founding, the colonies were in a period of “salutary neglect.” This unofficial policy meant the colonies were largely left on their own to govern themselves and to control their own trade. How would salutary neglect impact enforcing of the Navigation Acts and the development of smuggling?
12
Follow-Up Questions Be sure you kept up with who won each round.
Answer the questions in complete sentences on your paper (restate the question) What impact did the Navigation Acts have on trading? How did you feel about the restrictions on trade? Did you smuggle? If so, why? Why was smuggling used by the colonists? Who was mercantilism designed to benefit?
