2. INTRODUCTION Today we will talk about Cases of animal neglect in New Zealand How the animal has been neglected Consequences to the animal and the owner Aspects of unintentional and intentional animal neglect.

3. Consider the five freedoms Freedom from hunger or thirst Freedom from discomfort and inadequate shelter Freedom from disease and injury Freedom from distress and pain Freedom to display normal behaviour

4. What is animal neglect Owner Fails to provide basic care for an animal (five freedoms) and the animal suffers as a consequence.

5. Unintentional Some neglect cases are caused from owners not having an education of adequate care for the animal. Owners do not always know the effect and harm to the animal E.g dog being left in car on hot day. E.g leaving dog tied up on hot day.

6. Intentional neglect cases The owner is aware of the condition and circumstance of the animal yet fail to meet five freedoms. First case-two brothers, starved their horses to the point of death. Second case- A Hawkes Bay farmer neglected his sheep.

7. DANNY B The effects of animal neglect on Danny B the horse. Chronic neglect-long term Inadequate shelter Body score of zero Inadequate nutrition

8. Consequences for the owner The two brothers in Canterbury were sentenced to 16 months imprisonment also disqualified from owning animals for five years and had to pay $7000 for reparation. The second case Hawkes bay farmer was ordered to pay $7000 to the SPCA and $529 in reparation.

9. What is the law relating to animal welfare This is the animal welfare act 1999 under the New Zealand legislation. It’s a very wide ranging act that deals with the handling and management of animals and offences towards animals wellbeing. A person who commits an offence against the animal welfare act may face multiple penalties. Each case varies.
