Waves Wave Properties
2
Wave Definitions Wave Rhythmic disturbance that transfers energy Medium Material through which a disturbance travels Mechanical Wave Wave that propagates through a medium
3
Example 1
4
Wave Properties Crest – highest point above the equilibrium position Trough – lowest point below the equilibrium position Amplitude – displacement of medium (from equilibrium to crest or trough) Wavelength (λ) Distance between two adjacent similar points of the wave (ie. crest to crest or trough to trough)
5
Waves are Periodic! The frequency (ƒ) is the number of complete oscillations made in one second. Unit : Hz The period (T) is the time taken for one complete oscillation. It is related to frequency by T = 1/ƒ Unit : s
6
Types of Waves Transverse Displacement of the medium is perpendicular to motion of the wave EX: Electromagnetic Waves (EM) – light! Longitudinal (Compressional) Displacement of the medium is parallel or anti-parallel to the motion of the wave EX: Sound sound simulation - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aPswnDcteS4
