Bandwidth Management Advisory Service Overview of Presentation  The UK Educational Environment  Infrastructure  Bandwidth and traffic management problems  BMAS and work undertaken to alleviate these problems  The Technical Programme  Development environment  Streaming with bandwidth management applied  Packeteer in a campus environment  Conclusions

Bandwidth Management Advisory Service

Operational Environment Multi-Gbit SuperJANET connects multi-Gbit Regional Area Networks Regional networks connect Colleges, universities, other organisations. Over 150 Universities Over 600 Colleges Many Research Institutions Links range from 10Mbits/s (Colleges) – Gbits/s (Universities) An abundance of bandwidth on most university campus networks Not so on many college campus networks.

Bandwidth Management Advisory Service Problems Many unwanted protocols, some illegal on both university and college campuses. Critical link and segment congestion, especially on college campus networks. Solutions Evaluation of effectiveness of several products applied to time critical streaming services, namely:  Packeteer PacketShaper, Allot NetEnforcer, Cisco NBAR Deployment of Packeteer campus production environment

Bandwidth Management Advisory Service JANET-BMAS Streaming Trials Aim  Ability to promote time critical data (video streaming) and throttle non-time critical data (HTTP, FTP) Products/Solutions tested  Packeteer PacketShaper, Allot NetEnforcer, Cisco NBAR Conclusions drawn from technical results and human perception of quality of service

Bandwidth Management Advisory Service PacketShaper at The University of Manchester Location: Uses  P2P restriction  Virus propagation  Anti-DDoS  Blocking internal non-sanctioned HTTP/FTP servers

Bandwidth Management Advisory Service PacketShaper Advanced Features Top Talkers/Listeners  Identify bandwidth hogs PacketCapture  Identify non-sanctioned network uses  Beware of legal implications Adaptive Respond  Let the box adapt to network conditions before you even know about them Custom Classes  Adapt the PacketShaper to your exact requirements

Bandwidth Management Advisory Service Conclusions Future work Bandwidth will increase  …but so will bandwidth hungry applications More and more demand for time-critical services  VoIP  Video Streaming  Remote Collaboration  Video Conferencing JANET-BMAS ending but the need for bandwidth management will continue
