1  A CSUN general education goal is that you acquire an effective “understanding and use of written and spoken forms of communication.”  A course objective is that this course helps advance your ability to organize, convey and evaluate oral messages with clarity, accuracy, and conviction.  So we are going to discuss ways to develop your speech topic, understand and assess your audience and speaking environment, and some of the factors that make up the identities of your audience members.  We’ll then watch a speech and analyze it for aspects of a speech such as general and specific purposes and use of sources.

6  Consider your expertise ◦ What comes naturally to me? ◦ Have I ever had special training or lessons? ◦ Did you live or grow up in another country? ◦ Have you had unexpected or momentous experiences in your life?

7  Brainstorming: the process of generating ideas randomly and uncritically, without attention to logic, connections, or relevance
