E XPOSITORY E SSAY Lesson 1

W HAT ’ S THAT MEAN ? An expository essay is “a form of writing which intends to define, inform, explain, elaborate and expound the author’s subject to the reader”. Huh…? H OW ’ S IT WORK ? Who is your best friend ? And Why You get a writing prompt, (like the one on the side.) Or choose your own. Figure out what is the central point you’re going to write about. Come up with your topic. Brainstorm details and supporting facts. Write your essay. Revise. Polish and publish it.

Who is your best friend? And Why? A writing prompt is what you are assigned to write about. For this prompt, I want you to write about your best friend. For each writing prompt remember: FAT- P F- Format (letter or essay) A- Audience (who are you writing to) T- Topic (what are you writing about) P- Purpose (what is your reason for writing)

F- F ORMAT Write a letter to the editor of American Girl Magazine telling her why you should be the next Girl of the year. F- Letter (that means you need to use a letter format when writing.) Are you being asked to write a essay with paragraphs? Are you being asked to write a letter? Are you asked to write a poem or a short story? Format is very important. If you don’t follow the directions, you might loose points for your assignment. A general rule of thumb is if the prompt doesn’t say what format to use, write an essay.

A- A UDIENCE Write a letter to the editor of American Girl Magazine telling her why you should be the next Girl of the year. A- Editor Who is the intended audience? Writing is about communicating with others. You are writing for someone else to read it (and sometimes grade it ) Most of the time, if you are given a writing prompt for an essay or a journal, the person you are writing for is your teacher. You are going to need to write using a more formal language than if you were writing an email to a friend.

T- T OPIC Write a letter to the editor of American Girl Magazine telling her why you should be the next Girl of the year. T- Why you should be the next Girl of the year. What are you going to be writing about? What central idea are you going to need to support? It’s very important to stay on topic. Only include information that supports what you are supposed to be writing about.

P- P URPOSE Write a letter to the editor of American Girl Magazine telling her why you should be the next Girl of the year. P- Persuade (you want to be on the front cover, right?) There are 3 main reasons why writers write. It’s as easy as PIE to remember them. P- Persuade ( you want to make someone agree with what you think. I- Inform (give them information about a topic) E- Entertain (usually fiction- we’ll work on that next quarter )

A SSIGNMENT Download the Writing prompt worksheet. There are 10 writing prompt. You are to FAT-P each prompt, then submit it for a grade. Download the Journal Topics worksheet Choose three journal topics and write a short (one paragraph) journal for each. You can write then in one word document, just label each. Submit each by Saturday midnight (end of the week)
