MEDIA PROGRAM- PHASE 4 Australian Politics
3
Mining tax How many of you have heard of the mining tax? Through what media have you heard about it -just through television or other media? From the two advertisements we viewed, who will be affected? -why these industries/people? Why do you think the two advertisements address different standpoints? -who is being addressed?
4
Rocket Writing! Write as much as you can in 1 minute! What is the mining tax? Do you agree with it? Why/why not? Who is for or against the tax? Do you know what the mining tax means for you and your family?
5
Discussion Does anyone know why there is going to be a mining tax? Do you agree with the mining tax? Why is it a good idea/bad idea? Who will benefit from this tax? Who will suffer because of this tax? How could it effect our lives? Is there another solution possible? Will mining bosses and the government ever be able to agree on a suitable tax? What do you think about the type of advertisements/news articles used from each viewpoint? One sided/opinion? The emotion used?
6
Text A – Following the mining tax leader Text B – M ining companies muscle up for another stoush over new taxes in budget As you are reading the two texts think about: What viewpoint is being expressed in the article? Whose opinions aren’t being expressed? What effect does this have on the article? Why do you think the opinions are/aren’t expressed in the articles?
7
Newspaper Articles I have left this slide and the next blank for now and will need to come back and adjust only because as you stated Stevie – newspaper articles cross over into various different aspects of text types.
8
Lexical Tools Bias Opinion Emotion
9
Examples Add examples of emotion used in another article for students to view, To provide students with an example should I use a real newspaper article about a different topic so they can see how it works in newspapers in general before just focusing on politics and the mining tax or just focus on mining tax from the get-go?
10
Summary Newspaper articles use emotive language to persuade readers to view an article in a certain way. They focus on one viewpoint, providing details that reinforce only one opinion – influencing the readers. When constructing your own articles you will need to express one opinion, emotion and bias in your articles to persuade your readers. Dot point needed for format!
11
Meditation Find a comfortable position in your chairs, either sitting up or heads on desks and close your eyes.
12

Getting to know your topic Groups of 4-5 Use the Retreival Chart with the Action Research Diagram to identify and retrieve information from various sources Jigsaw method can be used – Elect each person to view one text and retrieve information individually for 5 mins Students regroup and discuss transferring all information onto their retrieval charts.
15
Think-Square-Share Each groups finds a buddy group to share their information with from their Retrieval Chart. Discuss each text and identify comparisons between your groups – use these comparisons to build on your arguments
16
Your turn! Putting it all together Stay in your groups and discuss the possible articles you can write on the mining tax. Feature, opinion, editorials, news article, etc Think about the features and structure of a newspaper article and what sort of language you will need.
