5 Treadmill Study Theory of NEAT (non-exercise activity thermogenesis) Partnered with Mayo Clinic in 2009 as first remote implementation site of “active office” – Cost ~$80k – Included the pre & post assessments, GRUVE device & software, and treadmill workstations Findings – 27 participants – Cholesterol HDL increased avg of 7 pts LDL decreased avg of 8 pts Triglycerides decreased avg of 50 pts – Body fat decreased by avg of 7 pounds or 2 percentage points – BMI decreased avg of 1 percentage point – Metabolic rate for walking at 1MPH was over 4 times rate of sitting in a chair (318 kcal/hr v. 65 kcal/hr) – Health risk assessment overall decreased from “medium” to “low” risk category – Improved scores on office environment, co-worker support, family support and individual behavior change © 2010 Michael & Susan Dell Foundation Company Confidential 5
