Rationale To provide specific care activities to babies requiring special care. To enable highly skilled Neonatal Trained staff to concentrate on caring for highly complex sick neonates. 7

Reviewing Skills For Health core competences and other levels, along with Scottish Neonatal Nurses Group (SNNG) core syllabus for clinical competences we matched knowledge and skills and developed: Career Framework For Neonatal Health Care Support Workers (NHCSW) ref.3 (Career Framework Levels 2 – 4) 2 new roles developed: NHS Fife Level 3 Neonatal Healthcare Support NHS Dundee Level 4 Neonatal Assistant Practitioner 8

Core competencies Assessment and learning log Competency Log Job Description Job Specification – must have SVQ level 3 Advert Matched by HR and Banded a 3 Advertising Interviewing Appointing 9

POSITIVES – Skills for Health assisted us in identifying an area where a new role could be created that promoted patient focus, flexible working and it was within our existing budget and adhering to national and local guidelines The role is focused on care of the Special Care baby and family. NEGATIVES – Within existing budget, time, meetings, getting staff together 10

IMPLEMENTATION Induction programme Working for first month supernummery Attached to NCE Mentor and deputy mentor Learning theory and practical aspects of role Completion of learning and assessment logs. 11

EVALUATION 6-12 months audit but continuous from beginning Families: Patient stories at discharge and later Wendy. Suggestions/comments box for parents Staff : survey tools – work in progress. 12
