A New Scanning Electron Microscope Lakeview has just received a $77,000 grant to purchase a new Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM for short). SEM’s are used professionally to see objects on the scales that are used in nanotechnology
2
An SEM scans a beam of electrons across a sample to produce an image. Objects can be magnified from 10x - 300,000x. We will be able to see objects as small as three nanometers across A New Scanning Electron Microscope
3
Each box zooms in and is 10 time smaller than the next. The circled box is 2 nm across. The different colored balls represent individual atoms Just how small is a “nanometer”?

Nanotechnology Acquisition of this microscope is a significant milestone for Lakeview It will allow students to see materials on the scale used for Nanotechnology for the first time. In addition, uses for the instrument have already been planned for courses in Biology, Chemistry, Physics & Technology
