Life Cycle In the spring they come back to Manitoba and find milkweed plants. They lay their eggs on the milk weed. 1 st It is a tiny ridged egg no bigger than a head of a pin. 2 nd the caterpillar begins to grow/ the egg changes color 1 st yellow then grey then it turns dark grey. The caterpillar bites a hole in its shell then a new baby caterpillar is born! Once the eggs hatch the caterpillars eat the milkweed. They become poisonous, and they make their chrysalis. Then they change into a butterfly. They come out of the chrysalis as a butterfly. Then they dry their wings, and they are ready to fly.
