Objective: You will trace the development of an urban city during the era known as the Industrial Revolution To accomplish the objective, you must follow ALL directions EXACTLY as they appear on each slide To begin, each person has: One large sheet of paper One “Key” to the symbols used to create your city Be sure your drawings are EXACTLY the same size as the drawings on the template Listen closely and refer to the slides if you forget what to do

Then, draw yourself ONE house Now, choose a location to construct a canal (a man-made waterway) Next, draw your canal in the SAME direction as the river

Jethro Tull’s Seed Drill improves efficiency of the sowing (planting) process resulting in a larger crop yield

The Year: 1782 Round 9: The work day is long (an average of 16 hours!) and stressful resulting in an increased consumption of alcohol Think about it… Where - on your map - might pubs get the most business? Then, add 5 Pubs in those locations Destroy (erase) 5 Houses Add 4 Tenements

The Year: 1800 Round 12: Henry Cort invents the puddling process – which burns coal for energy to make iron Add 1 coal mine Replace your city’s wood bridge with an Iron Bridge Add 5 Houses Think about it: In 1784, the puddling process is invented by Henry Cort. Based on this image, what role do you think these kids play in the process?

The Year: 1815 Round 13: The Demand for coal is rising to “fuel” the new transportation system Add 1 coal mine Children start to work in factories BUT their work is dangerous… Add 1 cemetery

The Year: 1820 Round 14: Dirt roads are inefficient and replaced by the railroad Add 1 Railroad Track that connects ALL of the Factories to the Coal Mine Please note, this must be one continuous track Add 5 Houses
