Joey Zoida Period 8

Producer  The book The Greatest War Stories Never told was produced by Rick Beyer.  Rick works for the History Channel and has shows like The Wright Challenge, Secrets of Jamestown, and The Patent Files.  He’s an award winning documentary producer.  Rick Beyer lives with his wife and two children in Lexington, Massachusetts.

The Greatest War Stories Never Told  The book futures stories of war.  The dates range from 371 B.C. in ancient Greece all the way to 2003 with the start of the war in Iraq.  They are told from many point of views, with many feelings of intrigue, ambition, revenge, audacity, folly and even some silliness.

Battle of LeuctraThe war in IraqThe French and Indian war 1755371 B.C2003

Format  The book is formatted unlike any other book that I have read.  It has a total of one hundred stories.  Each story takes up two pages, making the book two hundred pages.  Most have a picture for a visual of the story.

Would I recommend it?  I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys History.  It has many facts that most people don’t know about wars.  This book definitely expanded my knowledge on wars and battles.

A few fun facts I learned…  The croissant isn't French, it was first baked in Austria.  The Turks would try to tunnel under the walls, and bakers who worked throughout the night would hear them, and alarm the troops  The early alarm stopped the Turks from breaching Vienna’s walls.  The shape came from the symbol on their enemies flag (the Turks).  It was a creative way that the bakers celebrated victories that might have never happened without the bakers help!

A few fun facts I learned…  A vengeance that created a national shrine.  Montgomery Meigs and Robert E. Lee were fellow officers before the Civil War.  They both came from the South, West Point graduates, and engineers.  But, Lee resigning his commission to lead the Confederacy and Meigs staying loyal to the Union, becoming the Union quartermaster general.  It started when Lee’s armies filled up Union cemeteries with dead, and also Lee’s giant mansion looking down on Meigs.  So, he found a perfect way to get back on Lee. He recommended Lee’s beautiful ground of his mansion be turned into a cemetery.  Union bodies filled the beds of roses, Lee’s wife Mary devastated.  His vengeance turned into the Arlington Cemetery, Meigs and his son both buried there.

The Arlington Cemetery

To conclude..  This book was definitely a great pick on a History subject.  I learned many fun facts and important dates of wars and battles.  There were so many stories that astonished me and it was an easy read as well.
