Flamingos By: Hannah

Why I choose this I choose to research flamingos because Katelyn was wearing a flamingo sweatshirt and it gave me the idea. I also wanted to research them because I like pink and find them interesting.

The Greater Flamingo This is the Greater Flamingo. They live in Africa, Europe and Asia. It is the largest species of flamingos. It is 43-60in tall. They can weigh between 4-8lbs. Their feathers are pinkish-white. The bill is pink with a black tip and their legs are pink

Lesser Flamingo The Lesser Flamingo lives in Africa and India. They are the smallest and the most numerous. They weigh 4lbs and are 3ft tall. They have a wingspan of 3ft. The feathers covering it are pinkish-white. It’s bill is blacker than that of the Greater Flamingo.

Chilean Flamingo The Chilean Flamingo lives in South America. They range in height from 43in-51in. Their feathers are pinker than the Greater Flamingo but not as much as the American. They have grayish legs with pink “knees”. The bill is mostly black.

Andean Flamingo The Andean Flamingo lives in Peru, Chile, Bolivia, and Argentina. They are the rarest of the flamingos. They have a pale pink body with brighter upper parts, lower neck, breast and wings. The bill is pale yellow and black. What makes these different from other flamingos is that they have yellow legs and three toed feet.

American Flamingo The American Flamingo lives in the Caribbean and Galapagos Islands. They are also known as the Caribbean Flamingo. They range in height from 45in – 57in. The males weigh about 6lbs and females weigh about 4.9lbs. Most of the feathers are pink and they also have black feathers. The bill is pink and white with a black tip. Their legs are all pink.

What They Eat Flamingo’s eat Brine Shrimp, and blue- green eagle. Their beaks separate mud and slit from the food they eat. While eating they stick their heads upside down. The more shrimp in a flamingo’s diet the pinker they will be.

Flamingo Facts on Location Flamingos prefer shallow saline waters and lagoons with muddy bottoms, hence their webbed feet.

Uniqueness Flamingo’s often stand on one leg, the other tucked beneath the body. The reason for this behavior is not fully understood. The part we think of as their knee is actually their ankle. The whole bottom part of their leg is their foot. Only half of its brain go into a state of sleep at a time. When a flamingos migrate they do so mainly at night.

The Descriptive Paragraph This flamingo has yellow beady eyes. It has a longer neck than the other flamingo. It has a black tip with some white on it’s beak. The feathers are longer and pink. It is standing in water and is leaning on one leg.
