ENG 205 CE-ME-MECE-MSE AREA, SIZE, AND MASS

VOCABULARY

UNIT ABBREVIATIONS GRAMS: g KILOGRAMS: kg SQUARE MILIMETRES: mm² CUBIC METRES: m³ KILOGRAMS PER CUBIC METRE: kg/m³

CROSS-SECTIONAL AREA = π r² (adjective+noun): The area of what you see when you cut through the middle of something so that you can see its layers. If a cable’s cross-sectional area increases, it can carry more elecricity safely.

SURFACE AREA (noun+noun): The amount of surface that is in contact with the air To find the surface area of a cylinder, you need to add the top, bottom and side areas together.

SMALL-SECTION (adjective): Something that has a small cross-sectional area A group of small section cables are used in power lines

LARGE-SECTION (adjective): Something that has a large cross-sectional area We are changing the pipes in our house. We are replacing then with large- section pipes.

WEIGHT (noun): how heavy something is, which can be measured in kilograms She is trying to lose weight.

WEIGH (verb): To have a particular weight You need to weigh your luggage before going to the airport.

MASS (noun): The quantity of material that something contains which can be measured in kilograms or Newtons. Weight is used in non- technical language for this meaning. The mass of an object is the same on Earth and Moon, but the weight of an object is different.

GRAVITY (noun): The force that attracts objects in space towards each other and pulls them towards the centre of Earth Gravity keeps the planets in orbit around the Sun.

WEIGHTLESS (adjective): Having no weight because there is no gravity Astronauts work in weightless conditions.

VOLUME (noun): The amount of space that an object fills. It is measured in m³. There are jars of different volumes in the kitchen.

DENSITY (noun): The amount of matter in a certain volume of space and it is measured by mass per unit of volume Density can be changed by pressure or temperature.

DENSE (adjective): Having high density As you go up a mountain, the air becomes less dense.

LIGHTWEIGHT (adjective): not heavy I bought a new lightweight bike.

Tic-Tac-Toe Directions: Divide the class into two teams (Xs and Os). Draw a grid on the board. Ask the X group to answer one of the questions. If they get it right, Put an X on the grid. Do the same for group O. The group with a row of Xs or Os win. Books are closed.

__________________ is a unit of density. The fog is very ___________. I can’t see the road. The ____________ of an object is measured in kg not N. The _____________ on the Moon is 1/6 of the Earth. There is almost no pull of the Moon. These bags __________ 15 pounds. The formula for the _____________ of a cube is 6a² ______________ is measured in m ³. πr² is the formula for ________________ of a circular object. On the Moon, astronauts feel almost _______________. Words: Weight, weigh, mass, density, dense, weightless, small-section, large- section, cross-sectional area, surface area, grams, square milimetres, cubic metres, kilograms per cubic metres, gravity
