Cell Structure and Function Essential Question - How do materials move in and out of cells? How are living things alike? Lesson 13 – Carrot Lab Day 1

Objectives Students will be able to: – Identify variables – Hypothesize the results of their experiment How are living things alike?

Warm Up: You learned yesterday that in passive transport molecules move from areas of higher concentration to lower concentration. 1.When molecules move into a cell, how does that change a cell? 2.When molecules move out of a cell, how does that change a cell? 3.What kind of molecule moves during osmosis? How are living things alike?

Agenda – Today Students Will: Explore osmosis by constructing explanations for what will happen to carrots when placed in salt and fresh water. How are living things alike?

Osmosis in Carrots Lab How are living things alike?

Lab Data Table

Today’s Tasks in Short… 1.Identify this lab’s variables 2.Set up and label your cups 3.Weigh your carrots 4.Record today’s weights and textures – DON’T MIX UP YOUR CARROTS! 5.Draw and label your set up 6.Answer your prediction questions

Conclusion - Predict What do you think your carrots will be like tomorrow? How are living things alike?
