Definition Primary Groups are characterized by face-to-face contact and some degree of permanency. Primary Groups

Primary groups are mainly small and members communicate or talk freely, openly, intimately, with one another. Primary Groups

Types of primary groups The Family is the basic social unit in the society in which a group of people share the same dwelling place and are related by blood, economic ties or an interest in welfare of the members. Primary Groups

Functions of the family Procreate and nurture Provide food and clothing for their family members Provide shelter Love and support Socialization, the family is where a person learns to become a social being and interact with others. Primary Groups

Socialization The process through which a child is taught how to behave in preparation for the social role he or she will adopt in adult hood. Primary Groups

Types of Families The Nuclear family is two parent and their children. Primary Groups Members share the same home and corporate for the benefit of all the family. Eg the daily task around the house are shared and every one is expected to make a contribution towards a happy family life.

The extended family Members of an extended family may include grand mother, parent, children, aunts, uncles, cousins, step – parents and so on. Primary Groups

Single Parent A parent with his or her child or children With changes in the attitudes of our society and more relaxed divorce laws there has been an increase in the number of single parent families. They can be headed by men as well. Primary Groups

The Foster Family This also is a nuclear family where young children who are left without any support from their own family are looked after by a married couple who may or may not have children of their own. Primary Groups

Sibling Family A sibling family is family of children with no adults. Older children look after their younger sister and brothers when parents have migrate to find work and they are not part of a strong extended family. Parents may also die leaving the older children to take the responsibility of caring for the family. Primary Groups

The Blended Family This is a nuclear family in which two people who are already parents come together. They may have split up from their former partner or their first partner has died. Primary Groups

Peer Group A group of persons, usually the same age, with the same status and interests. Primary Groups

Peer Group Members are usually within the same age group and share similar interest and back ground. Children are exposed to another means of socialization when they start school. This means or agent is the peer group. Primary Groups

Peer Group Members of the peer group tend to undergo common or similar experiences and influences each other to respond to these experiences in a similar way. Primary Groups

Peer Pressure Arises if members of the group do not conform to the behavior of the group. It can influence members of the group to do good or bad things. Peers can influence you to study hard and get involved in useful extra curricular activities or to miss class, take drugs. Primary Groups

Although difficult at times teenagers should try very hard not to get involved in activities which they know are wrong just because members of their peer group are involved in them. Primary Groups Peer Pressure

Group of Friends We join our first group when we are old enough to leave the house on our own and play with neighbours children Friends are chosen because they are interested in the same thing as us. Primary Groups

Gangs A primary group which is in conflict with other group or groups. Some older children join gangs. Gangs may make people feel good about themselves at times when they are growing up and facing a lot of changes. Primary Groups

Characteristics They roam together for protection, challenging anyone who oppose them. They plan mischievous things to do and get into trouble wit the law at times. In their minds they are brave and dangerous. Community members see them as a threat to the community Primary Groups Gangs
