Extreme Environments The Atlantic Ocean By: Katrina Ting

Map of the Atlantic Ocean The Atlantic Ocean is the 2 nd largest ocean in the world! It covers about 20 % of the world and the area of it is about 106,400,00 square kilometers.

Where I would investigate  I would investigate in the Atlantic Ocean  I would investigate some of the coral reefs over there.  The climate in the Atlantic Ocean is determined by the wind and weather around others places. The climate is mainly a cold/cool place

The Atlantic Ocean  The Atlantic Ocean is difficult to survive in because of all the dangers you can’t see lurking beneath the waves.  Also, it is dangerous because of its lack of fresh food and water.  Some obstacles are the weather because it changes quite often so you are never sure of what’s going to happen next. Also, storms on the ocean are quite severe and can sink your boat very quickly.

Why is knowing about the Atlantic ocean important  Scientist and people care and want to know about the Atlantic ocean is because it may have some things we could use. E.I. a new kind of life form or food  It is important to investigate because it will help us understand the world we live in and what lies beneath the surface of the water.

Places with the same environment of the Atlantic ocean in Canada There is not a certain place of the same environment as the Atlantic ocean in Canada, but the Atlantic ocean plays a big part in how the climate is in Canada. Also, some rivers in Canada branch of from the Atlantic ocean in to Canada.

Exploration and technology of the Atlantic Ocean By: Katrina Ting

Underwater machines  The first submarines had simple designs  It had side propellers powered by foot pedals, a vertical propeller, a delayed action mine, a snort mass renews and expels air with help of bellows, and a Auger for drilling into enemy ship  The turtle hero was a one man submarine used during the Revolutionary war in 1776

Underwater machines continued…………(submarines)  Whale-shaped (HSM Dreadnought) Only one propeller at its tail end like a whale. Snort mass just like a whale has a blow hole on the top of its back.A whale has to come up to breath, the sub. Has an air conditioning system so its 88 person crew can stay submerged for weeks. Launched in 1960, it was Britain’s first nuclear-powdered submarine and the first submarine to surface at the North-pole.

Ocean Explorers  First measurements of the oceans depths were made by simply dropping a lead weight on a line and until the operation hit the bottom.  Gloria (geological long range inclined asdic (sonar))  26 ft. long and weighs 2 tons  Used for over 20 years to survey the ocean floor, scanning over 5% of the world’s oceans  Pieces of Gloria:  Cable drum  Nose  Launching cradle  Rope guide  (inside) two rows of transmitters

Technology used to explore and survive these regions  vessels, submersibles, diving technologies, and observation tools that transport us across ocean waters and into the depths, allowing us to examine, record, and analyze the mysteries of the ocean.  Air tanks  submarines  boats  Submersibles  under water cameras  satellite radars

Technology used to explore and survive these regions continued…….  wet suit  18 lb. boots  Microscope  Snorkels  Flippers  Harness  Oxygen chamber  Decompression chamber  Helmet  Diving suit

What Canada has done to develop technology  We have been manufacturing things like:  Robotics, Manipulators & Tools  Cables  ROV Components & Spares  AUVs - Autonomous Underwater Vehicles  USVs - Unmanned Surface Vessels  Manned Submarines and Submersibles

How can people explore this region responsibly People can explore this region responsibly by using submarines that run on solar energy or other things that will not pollute the earth as much. Also, the can take care not to dump their waste in to the ocean as many ocean life forms and fish will die if they do that.
