Table of Contents:  Review of weather map features –Temperature –Fronts –Forecasts –Precipitation –Sunrise and Sunset  Weather map problem solving

Remember that a weather map like this one gives us a lot of information.

A weather map can give high and low temperatures for local cities as well as places all over the world.  The map we are using tells temperature in degrees Fahrenheit.  High and low temperatures are usually shown this way: 85 / 72 Which is the high temperature? Which is the low temperature?

Weather maps show warm fronts and cold fronts.  Warm fronts are indicated by a red line like this:  Cold fronts are indicated by a blue line like this:

Weather maps give us forecasts which let us know what the weather is likely to be like in the coming days. What is the forecast for Atlanta today? Let’s find out!

Weather maps can show us where precipitation is likely to fall. Do you remember what precipitation is? Precipitation is… RainSleetSnow

Weather maps can even give us the times that the sun will rise and set in our area. Remember that the sunrise time will be A.M. Remember that the sunset time will be P.M.

Now…let’s use these weather facts to help sharpen our math skills…  Hail forms during strong thunderstorms when rain becomes frozen in powerful winds. The heaviest hailstone ever found weighed 1 ½ pounds. How many ounces did it weigh? Hint: There are 16 ounces in a pound. Answer: It weighed 24 ounces.

The table shows the amount of rainfall in Georgia for January – May. What is the total amount of rainfall for these months? Jan.Feb.Mar.Apr.May 2.33 in 4.36 in 7.80 in 5.09 in 2.76 in Answer: 22.34 inches

Look at the graph below. Which city had the coldest average temperatures for January? Answer: Chicago

To be classified as a hurricane, a storm must have at least 74 mph winds. Tropical Storm Dennis currently has a wind speed of 56 mph. How much stronger will the winds need to be before it becomes a hurricane? Answer: It needs to be 18 mph faster. Let’s watch this video from National Geographic which explains how a hurricane forms. video

The forecast for tomorrow’s weather gave the probability of a partly cloudy day as 50%. Look at the pie graph and determine the probability for sunny weather tomorrow. Answer: 25 % probability of sunny weather.

Tourists like to gather at the Grand Canyon to watch the sunset. The sun will be setting at 8:34 P.M., but the crowd gathers at 8:12 P.M. How long do they have to wait? Answer: 22 minutes

Now it is time to write your own weather map math problem.
