Earth Science Strand 6 MAP Prep
2
Strand 6 GLE 14 Classify celestial bodies in the solar system into categories
3
Asteroids – made of rocks Located in the asteroid belt: a region between Mars and Jupiter. They are small. Asteroids orbit the sun and the asteroid belt was thought to have formed from the left over remains of a planet that never formed.
5
Comets - made of ice and rock. Located in the Kuiper Belt, which is a region past Neptune. Comets have a very elliptical orbit and they melt as they orbit the sun. As the ice melts it creates a coma or a region around the comet that looks like a halo.
6
Meteoroid- made of Rock fragments. These form when two asteroids run into each other breaking off pieces and then those pieces fly through space. Meteoroids can also be formed when pieces of Mars or the moon are broken off and then travel toward Earth.
7
Meteors: These form when the rock fragments leave space and enter our atmosphere. The mesosphere burns these rocks and so they look like shooting stars. Meteorite: Rock that hits the earth and creates craters. These are rare.
8
Exit Ticket Pick two Celestial bodies and tell me how they are similar and how they are different. Where is the asteroid belt located? Where can you find comets?
9
Inner Planets vs. Outer Planets Complete the Classifying Our Solar System Table.
10
Strand 6 GLE 15 Describe the relative proximity of common celestial bodies

Strand 6 GLE 20 Relate the axial tilt and orbital position of Earth as it revolves around the sun to the intensity of sunlight on Earth during different seasons

The planet Jupiter is over 300 times as massive as the planet Venus. Yet you and I can see Venus with the naked eye, and definitely with a pair of binoculars. But for us to see Jupiter, even though it is very large, we would need a strong telescope. This is because A)Jupiter is on the opposite side of the Sun B)of our position on the surface of the Earth. C)most of Jupiter's mass is gas and we cannot see gas. D)Jupiter is so far from Earth and Venus is much closer.
