5 THE USE OF THE THIRD CONDITIONAL The third conditional describes a hypothetical situation or event in the past. The past situation or event is contrary to known facts. We can use the third conditional to express criticism.

6 THE FORM OF THE THIRD CONDITIONAL If + past perfect, would + have + past participle

8 If I hadn’t been stopped by the police, I would have arrived at the meeting on time.

9 I’d have taken a photo of that beautiful sunset if I had had my camera on me.

10 I wouldn’t have broken my leg if I hadn’t climbed that tree last week.
