1A2 Geography 6 th January, 2015 “Tertiary economic activity involves the provision of services and facilities. In a developed economy this involves a very wide range of activities.” –Junior Certificate Geography Syllabus.

Tertiary Economic Activities What do you think separates doctors, teachers and Gardaí from factory workers and farmers?

Tertiary Economic Activities Doctors, teachers & Gardaí → Services Sector → Tertiary Economic Activities. Factory Workers → Manufacturing → Secondary Economic Activity. Farmers → Farming → Primary Economic Activity.

Tertiary Economic Activities Write the following in your hardback: Tertiary Economic Activity involves providing services and facilities to people. The tertiary sector is also known as the services sector.

Tertiary Economic Activities Services include: Schools and colleges. Banks. Hotels. Restaurants. Shops. Hospitals. Law Firms. TV and radio stations. Newspapers. Airports.

Tertiary Economic Activities In the developed world, the number of people working in the tertiary sector is greater than the number of people working in the primary and secondary sectors. There are many reasons for this. See pie charts, pg. 49.

Tertiary Economic Activities In the economies of the developing world, there is not enough money to pay for the services that we have listed. Therefore, the services sector is not well developed and few work in Tertiary Economic Activities. Instead, most people in the developing world work in the primary sector and depend on this to provide for themselves.

Tertiary Economic Activities This changes, though, when countries start to develop.

Tertiary Economic Activities As economies start to grow, countries: Become less dependent on the primary sector. Focus more on manufacturing and produce goods for export. This brings money into countries and, as a result, they become richer over time.

Tertiary Economic Activities services. As a country becomes richer, the population has more money to spend on services. So the tertiary sector grows. In developed countries, such as Ireland, there are many industries in the services sector. See handout.
