Controversy in Texas Americans had first come to Texas for the farmland. Americans lived in Texas with the Tejanos (Mexican citizens living in Texas). For a time, these two groups seemed to coexist pretty well together.

Controversy in Texas After a while, Americans become the majority in Mexico. This is a problem for Mexicans because: A) The Americans speak English B) The Americans are mostly Southerners, and have slaves C) Americans are not respecting Mexican law/way of life

Americans do what they do best…
Revolution! Led by Sam Houston, Texans rebel against what they see as an oppressive Mexican government.

Texas vs Mexico At this time, it was Americans in Texas fighting to make Texas an independent state. Not yet a war between America and Mexico, just Texas vs Mexico. After winning, Texans hoped that America would annex the state.

The Alamo The Alamo was an old mission, located in what we now call San Antonio, Texas. Americans felt they needed to hold the fort to keep Santa Anna (Mexican President/General) from moving further North.

What happened at the Alamo?
Americans faced long odds. They had 187 men to defend the fort. When the Mexicans stormed the fort, hundreds of Mexicans died, and ALL of the Americans defending the fort died. 《 THE ALAMO - Final Battle 》( 2004 ) - YouTube

Legacy of the Alamo A “watershed” (this means very important) even in American history. Americans lost the Alamo, but their courage became legendary.

Americans Get Revenge Six weeks after the Alamo, American General Sam Houston and his troops caught up with Santa Anna’s men. They defeated the Mexicans and captured Santa Anna.

Treaty of Velasco Santa Anna signed the treaty after he was captured.
This treaty granted independence to Texas. Texas was an independent state, not a part of America yet.
