Those who were educated were sons of European nobles.
1.) I can analyze the reasons the Church was so powerful in medieval Europe. The Church and monarchies were trying to increase their centralized and political power. This led to a decline in feudalism. Men who filled important positions in the Church had strong social and political ties to Europe’s nobility. Those who were educated were sons of European nobles. European nobles and church leaders grew up together, so they often supported one another. Church officials helped political leaders run their kingdoms. The Church had great wealth. The pope’s wealth was greater than any monarch (king). The pope’s authority was greater than kings or emperors. 2.) I can identify causes of conflict between the Church and the monarchs. The pope said that laypeople, like Emperor Henry IV, could no longer appoint people to Church offices. Henry IV and his supporters declared the pope’s election invalid. 3. The pope excommunicated (or banished) Henry IV from the Church and removed him from authority. 4. Henry IV apologized and was reinstated as emperor. 5. This conflict was about power. Henry IV wanted to be more powerful than the pope.

3.) I can describe the contributions of the Church to education.
Religious orders worked to educate their followers. Universities developed out of schools established at cathedrals. Developed a new teaching method using lectures and textbooks.
