Hebrews 9:11-14 – “The Heart of Hebrews” Day of Christ’s coming, as high priest Through a greater and more perfect tent Not made with hands – not of this creation Not through the blood of goats and calves Through His own blood He entered once for all into the Holy Place, securing eternal redemption Cleansing was “so that we might serve”
4
Hebrews 9:15-22 – Christ’s Sacrifice and the New Covenant Christ’s death inaugurated the new covenant Christ’s death redeemed the sins of those who lived under the first covenant Christ’s death makes it possible for those who are called to receive the eternal inheritance
5
Hebrews 9:23-28 – The Finality of Christ’s Sacrifice If earthly things needed to be cleansed by sacrifice, the heavenly things needed to be cleansed as well Better sacrifices Christ is now in heaven for us! Once, for all time, not repeatedly Illustrated by the fact that man dies only once, Jesus dies only once to “bear the sins of many” Christ will appear a second time, not to die, but to save those who are waiting for Him
6
If apart from sacrificial blood there is no forgiveness And it is impossible for animal blood to provide that forgiveness Christ offering Himself is the only remedy for sin
7
Hebrews 10:1-4 – Shadow and Reality The Law was only a shadow of the good things to come The ceaseless repetition of the Levitical sacrifices could never “make perfect” the former worshipers The Day of Atonement didn’t provide relief from their sins, but actually emphasized the enormity of sin Animal sacrifices cannot remove the guilt of sin
8
Hebrews 10:5-10 – The Perfect Sacrifice Psalm 40:6-8 Burnt and sin offerings could not atone, so the Son will accomplish God’s perfect will by using the “body” provided for Him Christ became a man to take care of the ineffective sacrificial system and replace it with a new one He has, once for all, annihilated the Levitical system of sacrifice
9
Hebrews 10:11-18 – Seated at God’s Right Hand The Jewish priest stood daily, repeatedly offering the same sacrifices—which could NEVER take away sin When Christ offered, for all time, a single sacrifice for sins, He sat down at the right hand of God He was humbled on earth, He is exalted in heaven Where there is forgiveness of sin, there is no longer any offering for sin!
