A self-portrait is a representation of an artist which is drawn, painted, photo- graphed or sculpted by the artist. Albrecht Dürer. Self-Portrait, 1500.

Self-portraits Self-portraits began before photography. Artists used mediums like paint to create their self- portraits. Rembrandt. Self Portrait, 1640. Rembrandt. Self Portrait, 1669.

Self-portraits Portraits do not only have to be paintings – since the inventions of cameras, most por- traits are pictures. Pablo Picasso. The Artist Before His Canvas, 1938. Marc Chagall. I and the Village, 1911.

Self-portraits Vocabulary Portrait – a visual image of a person, usually showing the face. Self-portrait – a portrait of oneself made by oneself. Vantage point – where the camera is placed to take the photograph. The relationship between the camera and the subject. For example: is the camera placed at, above or below eye level (very similar to point of view)

Self-portraits Self-portraits reveal the character of the subject. Evokes emotion. Formal or candid. With or without props. Self-portraits portray the likeness of the subject, generally the face. Captures something about the person’s character. Should portray mood – show personality and character, allowing viewer to draw conclusions about the person in the portrait.

Self-portraits Ask yourself these questions prior to beginning… Who am I? Where do I come from? How has my life been shaped? Where am I going? (What’s your future?) How do others see me?

Self-portraits Dig deep! Challenge yourself! Self-portraits shooters usually rely on the trail-and-error method…Shoot, shoot shoot!! Be creative!

Using your camera, you will create a self-portrait. You will be the photographer, and you will not use pictures that have been previously taken. You may use the timer on your camera. You should take numerous shots and pick the best to turn in. Turn in the best 3 photographs that really tell about you. Put them in YOUR photojournalism folder in a folder labeled “Self Portrait.” You will make a PowerPoint with four slides – 1 title, 1/self portrait. Put it in YOUR photojournalism folder in the self portrait folder. Save it by YOUR LAST NAME. Due at the end of the period Mon., May 10. Presentations will be Tues., May 11.
