Seeking Selfhood By Allie Carrino

Artistic Statement With society being so easily influenced by the media, it’s become nearly impossible to find any sort of uniqueness, any minute detail that differentiates yourself from everyone else. As an artist, I strive to be unique, to be true to who I am. That is, after all, what art is about. Through the use of abstraction and surrealism, I feel I can portray images that are unique to me. Images that are, undoubtedly, my own. Being truly unique can often be a terrifying experience, as one literally forces oneself to stand apart from the crowd. No matter how ardently we pursue individuality, there will always be those moments where we don a mask and lose sight of who we truly are. Abstraction symbolizes this idea in that many abstract images are only half-truths. Abstract concepts may deceive the viewer because what they’re beholding may be entirely different from what they believe it really is. Surrealism, on the other hand, allows me to imbed and convey my true feelings and emotions without being harshly blunt. Though I want to stand out and be unique, I also want for my viewers to think for themselves and attempt to grasp the meaning behind my pieces. I feel it’s extremely important for my audience to feel a connection in my work and to know that, beneath each photo, there lies a part of me.

Biography Though I don’t consider myself to be a true artist just yet, I still uphold many artistic values. I believe it’s important to delve into all types of art forms and become educated in the many different media that are available to us. Because of this believe, I discovered the beauty of photography. Having worked with traditional media for many years, getting familiar with digital photography was a rather awkward endeavor. There were times were I failed, times where I succeeded, and times where I barely managed to make ends meet. Every experience, however, has taught me a little bit more about who I am as I journey down the road of becoming an artist. Through my mistakes, I’ve grown. Through my successes, my passion for art and photography has strengthened. Art isn’t, and never was, about doing things right the first time. It’s about the process and expedition to achieve the final outcome, whether it’s triumphant or not. I’ve made this process a part of my life and it will always make up who I am as a person.
