What is tone in a story? It is like a voice that is speaking to you. A literary technique to show the overall attitude towards the subject of the story. It affects the meaning of the story, and how you interpret it. Intense Dark Romantic Proud Desperate Depressed Calm
3
Why is tone important in a story? When the author sets a tone, it also sets the mood for the reader. Author=Tone Reader=Mood It helps to convey the message the author is trying to give. It helps to find the theme, purpose, and main idea of the story. “What is the author trying to tell me?”
4
Word usage is important when establishing tone! admiring adoring celebratory cheerful comforting compassionate confident delightful ecstatic elated encouraging friendly funny gleeful gushy optimistic passionate annoyed anxious apprehensive bitter blunt bossy cold conceited confused demanding depressed desperate disappointed disrespectful doubtful embarrassed
5
Symbolism expresses tone! Weather patterns (Sunshine, cloudy, raining, rainbows, etc. ) Colors- What colors do you think show tone? Idioms show tone! Since we can’t see body language and facial expressions, authors have to WRITE them. (Slouched body, droopy face, jumping for joy)
6
“I really need you to come inside now.” If the voice calling you is happy, what might the mood inside the house be? What events or details in the house would make for a happy mood? What events could cause an angry mood? What events could cause a calm or serious mood?
7
How does tone affect the author’s purpose? The tone of the story helps the author to portray what he/she is thinking while telling the story and what they are trying to tell you throughout. With no facial expressions, body language, and actual voice, the author has to find a way to portray his/her thoughts in a creative way. That’s what keeps the reader interested!
