7 Dix ALP 002 Model Philosophy  Scaffolding  Flexible  Practice Grading  Assignments and their weights were not pre-determined at the beginning of the semester.  Final grades were determined by dividing points earned by the total number of points possible at the end of the semester.  Students needed to earn 70% of the possible points to pass the course with a C.

8 Schedule of 111 and 002 assignments ENG 111 students always have the option of selecting from multiple writing prompts. ENG 002 assignments were designed to help students complete the most challenging of those writing prompts. All major ENG 111 assignments have multiple due dates. ENG 002 students were asked to meet additional deadlines and to begin completing ENG 111 assignments ahead of their peers in ENG 111.

9 Sample ENG 111 Writing Prompt: Select one poem that deals with the experience of being excluded from a larger group (or society in general). Write a multiple paragraph essay that addresses ALL of the following questions: 1. In the poem that you have selected, how do issues of race, class, or culture affect the speaker’s relationship with dominant/mainstream U.S. society? On what basis has the speaker been excluded, and how does the poem portray that exclusion? 2. How does the speaker of the poem respond to this experience of exclusion? What response does the poem encourage, either directly or implicitly? 3. Given the historical context of the poem that you’ve selected, what are the advantages and disadvantages of the response that the poem encourages?

10 Sample ENG 002 Writing Prompt: Claude McKay’s poem “America” (p. 938) presents the speaker’s response to being excluded from mainstream American society. After carefully reviewing your notes from class and rereading the poem, write a paragraph that responds to the following prompt: How does the speaker of “America” characterize his relationship with America, and how does he respond to his exclusion? Your paragraph should include evidence from the poem that supports your interpretation of the speaker’s relationship with America and his response to being excluded.
