Page 436 Questions 1-10 1. Do you agree with Anne that “people are really good at heart”? Why or why not? 2. The climax of a play is its moment of greatest tension, the point at which the main conflict is about to be resolved. What is this play’s climax? How did you feel at that moment? 3. In Act One, Scene 4, Mr. Frank tells Anne, “You must build your own character.” Has Anne done this by the end of the play? Explain. 4. What do you think is the main conflict in the play? Is it the conflict between the occupants of the Secret Annex and the Nazis, or is it something else? 5. During the crisis in Act Two, Scene 3, Mr. Frank says, “We don’t need the Nazis to destroy us. We’re destroying ourselves.” How would you describe the forces destroying the characters from inside? Do you think, given their desperate situation, that such behavior was inevitable? 6. On page 429, Anne says, “I want to go on living even after my death.” How has her wish come true? 7. Which of the resources that accompany the play—the maps, Anne’s diary entries, the historical photographs, the time line—did you find most helpful? Are there other resources you think should have been included? Explain your answers.

Page 436, cont. 8. What do you think this play reveals about our need for freedom? about the power of love? about courage and hope? about good and evil? In your answers, consider how the play’s themes relate to the themes of another work, such as Ann Petry’s story about Harriet Tubman (page 143). 9. Before The Diary of Anne Frank was first performed, Otto Frank wrote in a letter to the actor who would portray him, “Please don’t play me as a ‘hero.’… Nothing happened to me that did not happen to thousands upon thousands of other people.” Do you see anyone in the play as a hero? In your answer, cite the qualities or actions that you think make someone a hero. 10. The play’s version of events differs in many ways from what actually happened. For example: In real life, Anne was given the diary as a present for her thirteenth birthday, several weeks before her family went into hiding. The Frank family moved into the Secret Annex a week before the Van Daan family did. Margot was sixteen, not eighteen, when the Franks went into hiding. The occupants of the Secret Annex often went down to the lower floors of the office building after working hours. There is no evidence in Anne’s diary that Mr. Van Daan stole food. 11. Why might the writers have chosen to change or invent these details? Do you think it’s acceptable for writers to change details in works based on real people and real events? Discuss your responses.
