1 Understanding Historical Context for To Kill a Mockingbird - Group Jem 9/15/2014

4 Part I – Jim Crow Laws

5 Research “Jim Crow Laws” in Google.  1. Where did the term "Jim Crow" come from? How is the origin of this term offensive? List 3 ways.  2. How did the term "Jim Crow" become synonymous with the segregation laws in the South?  3. What ended Reconstruction in the South, and what effect did that have on southern blacks?  4. Legally, African-Americans had the right to vote. How was their right to suffrage compromised? Please list 3 ways whites made it nearly impossible for blacks to vote.  5. How did the Plessy v. Ferguson case (1896) uphold Jim Crow laws? What effect did this case have on the lives (transportation, education, social implications, etc) of southern blacks?  Try to avoid using Wikipedia!

6 Analyzing Photographs…  Look at the picture to the right.  In your word document, describe the things you notice in the picture.  What is interesting about the headline?  What do you notice about their clothes?  How does this connect to Jim Crow/segregation?  All answers must be in 3-4 complete sentences.

7 Part II - The Ku Klux Klan Warning – some images may be disturbing

8 Research the Ku Klux Klan in Google.  1. Why was the KKK initially founded? Where is the birthplace of the organization?  2. What were some of the main methods of intimidation for the group?  3. What was the clan’s membership in 1965? Why was there such a significant increase?  4. How many people were hurt or killed by the KKK? How did they hurt their victims?  5. Do you consider the KKK a group of domestic terrorists? Why or why not?  All answers must be in complete sentences.

9 Lynching  Look at the picture to your left.  In your word document, describe your immediate reaction to the picture.  Reference what you notice – who is in the picture? Where are people looking?  You responses should be in 4-5 complete sentences.

10 Part III - The Civil Rights Movement

11 Google search  1. When did the Civil Rights movement begin?  Why did it begin?  2. What are the NAACP, SCLC and SNCC? How are they different?  3. What was Brown vs. Board of education? What did it do?  What effect did the case have on the movement and schools in America?  4. Why did the movement gain momentum in the 1960s?  5. Name one of the prominent figures in the CRM.  You cannot use Martin Luther King!

12 Part IV - The Scottsboro Trial

13 Read through “The Scottsboro Boys Trial”  Go back to my website.  Click on the “Scottsboro Boys Trial” Word document.  Read through it and answer in your record the following questions:  1. Who were the Scottsboro Boys? How did they get into so much trouble?  2. Where and when did the Scottsboro Boys' original trial take place? How do you think this affected the outcome of their trial?  3. Describe the trials. Were they fair or unfair? Please include at least 3 supporting facts to back up your description.  4. Were the Scottsboro Boys ever pardoned of their convictions?  5. The Scottosboro Boys' trial took place during the childhood of To Kill A Mockingbird's author, Harper Lee.. Make a prediction about how this trial might be an important impetus for the book.
