4 FIRE DETECTION TO CONTROLLER IN HOG’S TROUGH FIREWALL SENSING ELEMENT
REDUCTION GEARBOX ACCESSORY DRIVE HOUSING TURBINE AREA COMBUSTION COMPRESSOR TO CONTROLLER IN HOG’S TROUGH FIREWALL Each engine is protected by fire-wire leading to a control unit in the freight bay hog’s trough. It is routed around the engine and in particular the AC generator (due to it’s magnesium alloy composition). Supported by ‘P’ clips, it must not be disturbed from it’s path or mountings. NOTE: The main point to remember is that there is a 300 kt breeze through the cowling in flight, therefore we always assume that if the fire warning has been given then the temperature must be VERY HOT in the detection area and that a fire is burning and we action the drill. 7 FIRE WIRE INCONEL TUBE (CONNECTED TO EARTH) CERAMIC CORE
The fire-wire sensing element consists of an ICONEL tube which encloses a wire in a special ceramic core. The ceramic core has an inverse co-efficient of resistance in that when it gets warm, it’s resistance goes down. When the element is subjected to heat, at a predetermined level, it’s core resistance will be sufficiently low to permit current flow between the inner wire and the outer casing. At this pre-determined level, it’s control unit is triggered and a FIRE warning will result. CURRENT CARRYING CENTRE WIRE Fire-wire Issue 1 (2 Nov 98)

Squibs The rear bottle provides the No #1 shot and the forward is labeled ‘reserve’. They are nitrogen charged to nominally 600 psi (temperature dependent). The pressure gauge on the No 2 bottle can be checked during the pre-flight external check. Each contains 19 lbs of BCF and they are dark tan in colour. 33 Directional Control Valve
To GTC From Fire Bottles Normally Closed position NC NO Normally Open position Operating Solenoid The Directional Control valves are sprung loaded to a Normally Open position. The Normally Open and Closed positions indicate which ports are open or shut with no power applied to the operating solenoid. The system is set up so that the solenoids are directed to the No 2 engine. When a ‘T’ handle is pulled, the Normally open port is blocked and the Normally closed port is opened to permit flow of extinguishing agent to the desired location. 35 Fire Extinguisher Valve Control Assembly Battery Bus Bar ‘T’ Handle
Indicator Fuses Describe the control valve operating system. When a ‘T’ handle is pulled, the LEDEX switch determines which control valves are actuated. With the handle pulled, the valves will stay in that position until battery power is interrupted, lost or the ‘T’ handle is reset. If a second ‘T’ handle is pulled (fluid loss?), should a second shot be required to the original engine or GTC then it’s ‘T’ handle must be reset and pulled again to re-route the control valves. NOTE: The largest drain on the battery occurs if the No 4 ‘T’ handle is pulled as 2 directional control valves are routed.
