E Reading As defined in the OED e-reader noun a device or application to facilitate or enhance the reading of electronic material. e-Book Pronunciation:/ˈiːbʊk/ noun an electronic version of a printed book which can be read on a computer or a specifically designed handheld device.

Lessons from practice Newcastle University subscribes to the ebook library http://www.eblib.com/ http://www.eblib.com/ The library has a set of ebook readers for students to borrow the Sony PRS505 and publish a FAQ on their use http://www.ncl.ac.uk/library/resources/ebooks/faq/loan_scheme.php http://www.ncl.ac.uk/library/resources/ebooks/faq/loan_scheme.php

From the Library FAQ on e-readers part 1 Library FAQ: Can I download an e-book from EBL and NetLibrary using a cluster computer? Some e-books downloaded from our Library collections contain Digital Rights Management (DRM) protection to prevent the downloaded e-book from being shared with others. To ensure that the downloaded e-books are not 'locked' into one computer, you will be asked to download Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) software. The rights to use the e-books are then assigned to you through your Adobe ID. Care is needed as ADE only allows you to activate a maximum of 6 physical devices to download to (this includes e- readers, pcs and laptops). Downloading items from these collections from cluster pcs is therefore not recommended.

From the library FAQ part 2 FAQ How do I transfer e-books onto the reader? You can download free e-books from other websites on your own computer, then transfer to the Reader using a hi-speed USB connection. You should not purchase personal e-books or download the Library e-book collections for use on a Library e- Reader as the Digital Rights Management (DRM) software means that you will not be able to subsequently transfer them to other e-readers. You can download copyright free e-books from many websites, as indicated on this list. Not all will work with the reader - those which do are clearly identified

A students perspective “So basically: “no downloading general e-books to library computers”, “if you download a book from EBL you can't then put it on one of the libraries e-readers ” “I find the implications of not being able to read e-books on either university cluster pcs or the university e-readers pretty horrific. Only students with their own computers are able to access e-books? Reprehensible” “I needed a book that is an e-book in our library this week. I'm going to have to go to Durham to look at it - I need photocopies of the plans to go in my thesis and I'm not allowed to print any of the e-book.”

Think about that for a moment and you realize we are in the right job.“ Michael S. Heart (1947 – 2011) Founder of project Gutenberg
