3 S Extramural Funding ecure Extramural Funding for IT Projects What is it: Extramural Funding is support garnered from outside an institution or organization that generally comes in the form of a grant, contract, loan or gift. That support can come in the form of money, people, equipment, or other tangible that requires management and administration of a line item budget and the adherence to prescribed guidelines and requirements.

Can be used to plan, seed, implement, improve or evaluate a project. Requires that a project be thought through from start to finish

Over the last 9 months, the NSF audited, evaluated and redesigned all grant programs and retooled CISE to focus on IT research. Initiatives at K-12 schools generally can get funding from state education departments or through the state budget

27 S Other Sources of IT Funding ecure Extramural Funding for IT Projects Earmarks Federal – Generally must be a project that can have an impact on a state’s economic development or national in scope. State – There needs to be a return on the investment to the state’s taxpayers.

29 S Preparation Tips ecure Extramural Funding for IT Projects Read the RFP, then read it again. List all the RFP requirements especially the Critical Review Talk to the Program Officer Get input from everyone, but let one person pull everything together. Write in the third person with an active voice Be sure the budget links to the narrative Be consistent Allow time for revisions

They are your best source of current information Institutional support is critical Think strategically and think long-term
