2 What makes a story unforgettable?
Warm-up 9/2/14 On page 1 of your journal… Please answer the following question What makes a story unforgettable? Answer in 2-3 sentences Hint: Start by thinking of your favorite book or story then think about all the elements that kept you interested. Vocabulary Define: ferocity, quiver, linger, sheepishly Ex: Ferocity: fierceness, anger 2. Quiver: Lead them into discussing how a story rises and falls. The issues that characters have within themselves or with other characters in the story.

Pick up the your warm-up sheet located on the cart in the front of the class and complete the activities. Vocabulary Define: portly, unison, conviction, scowl, trudge

4 Warm-up 9/4/14 On page 5 in your journal… Write a summary paragraph (5-7 sentences) of your favorite story, book, or movie.

5 Warm UP 9/5/14 On page 7 of your journal… Ex: Character vs. Nature
Choose one of the 4 types of conflicts we’ve discussed. Then draw a picture that is symbolic of the relationship between the protagonist and a antagonist in that particular conflict. Ex: Character vs. Nature Car(person in car)= Protagonist Tornado= Antagonist

6 Warm-up 9/08/14 On page 9 in your notebook… As learned in the story, “Seventh Grade,” a person’s seventh grade year can be an awkward time in their life. Describe a time (this year or last/ in school or at home) when you’ve experienced feelings similar to Victor: embarrassment, shyness, having a crush, feeling victorious, or out of place… Try to make your description 3-4 sentences.

8 Warm-up 9/10/14 On page 13 of your journal… Use EVIDENCE and paragraph numbers from “Thank You Ma’m” to prove the following statements True or False. Copy down the statement and WRITE YOUR ANSWERS IN COMPLETE SENTENCES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Mrs. Jones and Roger aren’t well educated. Be sure to mention whether this statement is true or false before you use text evidence Example: It is true that…/ It is false that… Roger is stronger than Mrs. Jones. Mrs. Jones doesn’t care much for Roger.

Which characteristics do you think helps to make you guys so close? It can be qualities that you share that bring you together or differences that you guys have that help compliment each other. Warm-up 9/19/2014 On page 19 of your notebook, Review for your quiz by writing down and answering the following grammatical questions: Verbs: Is the verb linking or action? America looks like a safe haven for many refugees around the world. Ms. Martin appears to be nice, but Ms. Pratt knows the truth! Adjectives: List all the adjectives used in these sentences: This quiet, private walkways makes me feel a little tired, but also happy. The wet sidewalk glistens in the bright lights from the windows of stores.

11 On page 25 in your journal… Make those listed events specific.
Warm-up 9/29/14 On page 25 in your journal… Think of a person who matters to you, then list clear, small moments you remember with him or her. Make those listed events specific. You can do 1 person and two moments with them OR You can do two different people with a moment for each. Example: Person Specific detail Moment My Mom One year, my mom and I spent Christmas at my aunt’s house. That year I asked for a puppy and when I awoke, I didn’t have one. My mom told me Santa “wrote me a letter” about why he couldn’t bring the puppy. My half sister I remember meeting my half sister for the first time when I was 12. My dad, my half sister, and I met in Manhattan a few blocks away from Central Park. We went bowling, we listened to music together, and then we ate Chinese food after we finished bowling.

Warm-up 9/30/14 On page 27 of your journal… Recopy the following paragraph but add more SPECIFIC details to the story. Use adjectives and proper nouns to help “paint the picture” for a reader. Mark was a boy who liked eating a lot of snacks. He ate junk food every day until most his teeth were rotten. His mom couldn’t believe how bad things had become so she made a dentist appointment. Mark hated going to the dentist. Every visit to the dentist meant less and less snacks. When they arrived at the dentist’s office, it was a nightmare come true for Mark. He couldn’t believe that his mother would do this to him. He sat in the chair looking around at all the sharp tools. All he could think was torture chamber.

13 On page 29 of your notebook…
Warm-up 10/06/14 On page 29 of your notebook… Besides the book that we are currently reading, think of a story (book, short story, fable) in which the setting was extremely crucial to the overall story. Write down the title of the story In 2-3 sentences (or more) explain why the setting was so crucial to the story. Ex: The Hunger Games -What would this story be without the setting?

Warm-up 10/10/14 On A SEPERTAE SHEET… You have until 9:20 to copy down the definitions of the words on this list you don’t know. I HIGHLY suggest you do this! Define the following words Dauntless Valiant Indignant Moronic Indifferent Belligerent

15 Grammar: Prepositions
On page 33 of your journal… Use Warriner’s Handbook (yellow grammar book) to copy down the definition of preposition on page 58. Copy down everything on the page from the words “The Preposition” to the beige box titled, Commonly Used Prepositions.
