Sprains/strains Injections Bracing Non Surgical Orthopedic treatment Role in Workers’ Compensation
4
Conservative Treatment Relieves Immediate Pain Reduces inflammation Injection Therapy
5
Cortisone or Corticosteroids PRP Platelet-Rich Plasma Viscosupplementation Types of Injections
6
Bursitis Arthritis Trigger finger Tennis elbow Carpal Tunnel For treatment of Inflammation caused by:
7
Powerful anti-inflammatory Not pain reliever High concentration of medication into specific area which allows possible side effects to be kept to a minimum Cortisone
8
Cortisone injections usually work within a few days and have the potential to last for several months Cortisone
9
PRP – Treatment that relieves pain by promoting long lasting healing of the musculoskeletal conditions Platelet-Rich Plasma
10
The body's 1 st response to soft tissue injury is to send platelet cells to the injured area. PRP delivers a concentration of platelets to the affected area by injection using the patients blood. A small sample of blood is drawn, placed in a centrifuge, spun at a high rate of speed and reinjected. How Does it help?
11
Takes about 2 hours Three injections with in a 6 month period Expected Results PRP
12
Injection of gel-like substances (Hyaluronates) into a joint to supplement the viscous properties of synovial fluid. Natural substance found in the body and is present in very high amounts in the joints. It acts like a shock absorber in the joint and is needed for the joint to work properly. Viscosupplementation
13
Failure of diet, exercise and over the counter pain relievers Indications for Viscosupplementation
14
3 spaced injections “All in one” injection Synvisc/Synvisc One/Orthovisc and Monovisc
15
Can provide up to six months relief Expected results
16
Adjunct to Injections While the patient gains pain relief and decrease of inflammation, it aids the physical therapist to work on range of motion, and strengthening of sprain/strains for faster return to work. Physical Therapy after injections:
17
Most patients can return to work after injections with lost time. Return to Work
18
If all conservative measures have not helped with the ADL’s for the patient, a surgical consult is needed. Treatment can easily be transferred to the main clinic where several surgeons are on staff. Failure of conservative treatment
19
Early treatment and good patient care can give the patient a feeling of the symptoms being seriously addressed and will likely result in an early return to work with less lost time.
