Light Chapter 13 The Visible Spectrum
2
Light ä Key concepts include: ä Speed of light = 299, 792, 458 m/s (use: 300,000,000 m/s) (use: 300,000,000 m/s) ä The visible spectrum, light waves, reflection, refraction, diffraction, opaque, transparent, translucent
3
Light ä Explain the relationships between wavelength and the color of light. Name the colors of the visible spectrum. ä ROYGBV
4
Vocabulary ä Visible spectrum (visible light): a combination of several different wavelengths of light traveling together. It is part of the Electromagnetic Spectrum.
5
Vocabulary ä ä Waves: a disturbance which carries energy and that travels away from the starting point. ä ä Wavelength: the distance between one crest of a wave and the next crest ä ä Crest: the highest point of a light wave ä ä Trough: the lowest point of a light wave ä ä Frequency: the number of waves (light or sound) produced in a given unit of time, such as a second
6
Reflection and Refraction ä Compare and contrast reflection and refraction Reflection Refraction
7
Vocabulary ä Reflection: the bouncing of light from a surface ä Refraction: the bending of light as it passes through one material to another
8
Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Processes ä Explain the terms transparent, translucent, and opaque, and give an example of each. Plastic wrap Wax paper Aluminum Foil Transparent Translucent Opaque
9
Vocabulary ä Transparent: materials that allow all light to pass through ä Translucent: letting light through but scattering it ä Opaque: materials that do not let light through ä Transmit: to send (as in sound or light). It also means light passing through an object.
