1. Digital Art II: “Fake” Collage

The concept here is to extend what you’ve already done last year in Digital Art with using various image adjustments and filters, along with what you’ve just done: adjusting color curves to create fake color. For this project, you’re going to begin with a color photograph that has several different identifiable sections and/or objects. You’re then going to alter different parts of the image such that the final visual result still attracts and satisfies the viewer’s attention, even as the photograph no longer looks like a seamless unified whole. That is, you’re going to make it look like a lively collage of elements. The safest way to proceed technically is to duplicate the layer with the photo several time. Then, make your various adjustments and alterations to the different layers; make sure always to keep a copy of the original unaltered image (e.g., in a background layer). Use layer masks on the various layers so that you’re only letting us see selected portions, corresponding to objects or sections that are already present in the original photo. (Don’t invent new boundaries!) To make your selections, try using the magnetic lasso tool on the layer with the original photo. Saving your selections will be very helpful! On the two following slides, you’ll find two good student examples. One is a warm-up in the sense that it was made from a photo not taken by the student himself. The other example is from a photo by the (different) student himself.
