Do you know the definition of each word?
4
Essential Question How do we identify geometric shapes?
5
There are many different geometric shapes.
6
polygon polygon – a closed figure made up of three or more line segments.
7
Examples: The following are examples of polygons: The figure below is not a polygon, since it is not a closed figure:
8
irregular polygon irregular polygon- a polygon that has sides of various lengths and angles.
9
parallelogram parallelogram- a shape that has four sides where the opposite sides are equal in length and parallel.
10
parallelogram parallelogram - a four-sided polygon with two pairs of parallel sides. The sum of the angles of a parallelogram is 360 degrees. Examples:
11
rhombus rhombus- a shape that has opposite sides parallel and four sides all of the same length.
12
rhombus - a four-sided polygon having all four sides of equal length. The sum of the angles of a rhombus is 360 degrees.
13
trapezoid trapezoid – a four sided shape with only 2 parallel lines.
14
trapezoid trapezoid - a four-sided polygon having exactly one pair of parallel sides. The two sides that are parallel are called the bases of the trapezoid. Examples:
15
rectangular prism rectangular prism – a three dimensional figure with 6 faces - opposite faces are the same size.
16
quadrilateral quadrilateral- a polygon with four sides and four angles. 90° 90˚ 90° 90 x 4 =360 °
17
quadrilateral quadrilateral - a four-sided polygon. The sum of the angles of a quadrilateral is 360 degrees. Examples:

Essential Question How many ways can we measure things?
20
Ways to Measure Length Inch Feet Yard Meter Centimeter
21
length length - the longest measure of anything. A ruler helps you measure length.
22
inch inch- a measure of length equal to 1/12 of a foot. A way to measure length. A quarter is about 1 inch. 12 inches = 1 foot
23
foot foot- 12 inches equals 1 foot. Use a ruler to measure length.
24
yard yard- a unit of measure of 3 feet or 36 inches. Use a yard stick to measure length. 36 inches = 3 feet = 1 yard
25
centimeter centimeter – Metric Measurement - A unit which is less than an inch or 1/100 of a meter. A way to measure length.
26
meter meter – the basic unit of length in the Metric System which equals about 39 ½ inches. Meter –a way to measure length.
